Welcome to Elder Class!
Kirk 1

Thank you for visiting our class page.  We are a class of Year 4, 5 and 6 children.  Elder Class is taught by Mrs Pyle on a Monday; by Mrs Sawyer on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and by Mrs Appleton on a Friday.

We are always really busy taking part in lots of exciting things to help support our learning.

Keep reading to see what we have been up to...

We were very excited to welcome Keir Mather MP to Kirk Hammerton.  He spoke to us about his role as the MP for Selby & Ainsty before answering all our questions.  Mr Mather spoke about his passion for environmental issues as well as helping people who may find things tough at the moment, and about the importance of democracy in our world today.
As it was World Book Day, he told us that his favourite children's books are the "Harry Potter" series.
We want to thank him very much for making time in his busy schedule to visit us.

As part of our learning about World War II, we had a great time at the Yorkshire Air Museum.  We were able to look inside a Halifax Bomber, take part in a paratrooper's experience (with the help of the Dakota), learn about the role of Bomber Command as well as look closely at different artefacts.

No soggy bottoms here!  We enjoyed making Christmas Chocolate Truffles.  On your marks, get set... BAKE!

We took part in the Remembrance Day 2023 - BBC Live Lesson.  Newsround's Shanequa Paris and poet Tomfoolery hosted from Imperial War Museum North in Manchester.  Poet and Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho set us a poetry challenge - to write our own poems about why we remember.  Former Royal Marines Commando and Invictus Games Medallist JJ Chalmers answered questions from children.  We tried very hard to use powerful language and poetic devices in our poems and we even got a "shout out" on the live feed.

Engineers put pure scientific knowledge into practice – but their jobs often involve practical testing, problem-solving and teamwork too.  We had to put all of these skills into action, to help build a tall, strong tower using spaghetti and midget gems.
